Proposed ‘Home for Girls’ – Nugegoda
The ‘Home for Girls’ was established in 1978, as a residential care unit for destitute, abandoned and orphaned girls. The current home is to be relocated to provide much needed open garden space and custom-built amenities, caring for 35 girls. The home is registered under the Department of Probation and Childcare Services and strict guidelines had to be followed in relation to building regulations. Public spaces are carefully separated from the private. The dining area opens out to a large garden. The computer lab and study open out to an indoor courtyard and are located on the ground floor. On the first floor, junior and senior dormitories are separate and independent of each other and each have balconies overlooking the garden below. On the second floor, a roofed recreational area opens to the outdoors. Along with the open plan approach in design, a variety of building materials, textures and colours are used to enhance the quality of space, making it warm, inviting and to create a sense of home.
